LEGAL PROCEEDINGS SERVED TO NMC

On the 17th March the judicial review to protect independent midwifery commenced.

HELP FUND THE LEGAL CHALLENGE

To help raise the funds to cover the costs of the legal challenge please go to the GoFundMe page.

Every penny helps no matter how large or small. Legal action is probably the only way to ensure the NMC listen.

NMC Complaints

It seems their moles have been busy. All complaints have been given unacceptable extended deadlines "due to unforeseen circumstances" and "so that we can give a full and final answer" however, we have seen a new response of "now that there is a judicial review we cannot comment further"

I wonder if this was the real reason to extend the deadlines, in the knowledge that legal action was coming and no questions would have to be answered (for a while anyway!)

Naughty and Nice list

There aren't as many of these now, but we still have a good few MP's engaged. Still not enough of them grasping the entirety of the problem and the challenges that IM's face. Indeed one wrote to a local trust, who responded that the IM's in question should "just go get some alternative indemnity insurance to allow continuity of care to continue"...

Great... I'm not sure why we didn't all think of that sooner. See above!

Updates

These have been a bit slower lately due to other commitments. This may also be why there isn't always a response to emails. I am planning to publish the many messages of support on a new page shortly.

Supervisor of Midwives

Highly experienced and qualified midwives currently fill the role of Supervisor of Midwives (SOM), providing the only pathway currently for women to raise concerns about their care. They provide support to all midwives in maintaining excellent care and would facilitate investigations into any incidents. This role will be abolished on 31st March 2017 with the suggestion that an unspecified and optional supervisory function is carried out by existing managers.

Midwifery Representation

The midwifery council is set to be disbanded, also on 31st March 2017 despite 91% of respondents to the consultation wanting to keep it.

Positive Birth Movement

Milli writes a blog, The Mule, where she has expressed her support for independent midwifery - you can read that here

Milli is also the founder of Positive Birth Movement

A positive birth means a birth in which a woman feels she has freedom of choice, access to accurate information, and that she is in control, powerful and respected. A birth that she approaches, perhaps with some trepidation, but without fear or dread, and that she then goes on to enjoy, and later remember with warmth and pride.

Birthplace Matters

Birthplace Matters is a campaign to restore confidence in homebirth and defend the human right of families to have a homebirth which is supported and attended by NHS midwives.
